QatarDebate organizes the second U.S. Championship at The University of Chicago

Organised by QatarDebate – a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development- The Second U.S universities arabic debate championship starts Friday November 12^th. Hosted by the University of Chicago with participants from top American universities where 150 debaters representing 40 teams will compete during 3 days from 12^th till 14^th of November.

After the distinct success of the first edition of the championship in 2019 at Harvard University, the second edition kicks off with the organization and support of QatarDebate.

The championship is in line with the shared vision of the youth despite their distinctive native languages and cultures they come together to engage in dialogue promoting world peace and security.

The large number of top universities participating in this championship reflects the international status of QatarDebate and its efforts to spread the Arabic language in the American continent.

The championship will be covering an array of comprehensive and objective debate topics considering the American context in some cases.

Prior to the championship, QatarDebate has executed an intense training program in Arabic for native and non-native speakers in an effort to prepare participants for the competition. Some workshops conducted specifically to judges were sectioned into two groups to accommodate their busy schedules. Debate instructor Nadia Darwish – QatarDebate – says “during the training sessions we covered many aspects including the mechanism of selecting winners, how to defend a score and distinguishing between justification and feedback through testing judges to measure their understanding and pinpointing their strengths and weaknesses. The sessions include judging debates and builds on techniques provided by instructors through a special workshop showcasing results and feedback to avoid common mistakes during the competition and to manage the first rounds in high levels of professionalism.”

34 American universities competing are: Brigham Young University, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Collin College, Connecticut College, Duke University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, Georgetown University in Qatar, Harvard University, Indiana University, Islamic University of Minnesota, Missouri State University, Morgan State University, Salem State University, Smith College, Stanford University, Texas A & M University in Qatar, Texas Tech University, The University of North Chapel Hill, Tufts University, University of Arizona, University of California – Davis, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Chicago, University of Colorado Denver, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Iowa, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of North Georgia, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Utah, Utah State University, Western Kentucky University.

QatarDebate team, confirmed the commencement of preparing for the championship that started last summer with various workshops and training sessions for all participants. Moreover, the QD team has conducted site visits to the location of the championship to check on final logistic and technical details to assure everything is ready for the competition. In addition to the QatarDebate team, QD ambassadors, elite members, student volunteers from University of Chicago have joined in organizing the championship.
